We recommend flying to Helsinki (Helsinki Vantaa Airport). Public transportation is available directly from the terminal to get to either Helsinki or Turku.
Flying from Atlanta, we typically fly Delta/KLM through Amsterdam. Recently, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has started a route via Copenhagen. Other routes have included flying through Paris (make sure you have what you need in carry on!) or you can fly with Finnair direcly from New York to Helsinki. Please feel free to message us to ask about flights!
There is an airport in Turku, which is very small but does occasionally have options if you're making a longer European trip plan for the summer.
Renting a car is certainly possible from either the airport or once you get to Turku. It's not completely necessary, but if you're unsure please feel free to ask us what is the best option for you!
Driving in Finland is easy and safe. If anything, the speed limits are slow and most everyone follows the rules.
If you're coming straight to Turku, there is a bus that takes you directly from the airport terminal. The drivers speak English, they help load your luggage under the coach, and the bus has wifi. It is a very comfortable way to get to Turku. Tickets can be purchased at the airport, which you may consider in case there are any air travel delays.
The train is also an option but is more convenient if going into Helsinki. We recommend using public transportation in and around Helsinki, and day passes for multiple transportation modes make things really easy.
For Helsinki public transportation
ABC ticket will get you from airport all the way to the city center
We recommend downloading this app to use for requesting rides when in Finland. It works just like Uber and Lyft.
We have booked the Radisson Blu Marina Palace as our hotel for the wedding. If you wish to stay there for the weekend, you can book directly with the hotel at the link below. (Note: There are no wedding blocks as is typical in the US!)
We've also included some other areas you may consider staying for the weekend or if you wish to extend your trip!
This is on the same island as the reception. It's outside the city but offers a more scenic option, with outdoor activity options around.
This hotel is right next to the main market square and lots of restaurants and shopping nearby. It does boat about the rooftop, but we think the Sokos rooftop is actually a better spot! As a hotel, it is a convenient option and also where we were for Joonas and Kasey's Finland celebrations.
This hotel is on the same corner as Scandic Hamburger Bors. We have not peresonally stayed here but the rooftop bar - both indoor and outdoor spaces are worth a visit, at the least!
This option requires a car as it is located in Naantali, 20 minutes north of Turku. Naantali is a beautiful sea town worth visiting. The hotel is a little outside of the old town Naantali.
You should absolutely make time for Helsinki. The cobblestone streets are easier to navigate with comfortable shoes and even in the summer, be sure to have layers ready for every day!
Explore the city, cruise around the islands surrounding Helsinki, or take the short ferry to Suomenlinna.
There are multiple ferries to Tallinn, Estonia each day. We typically do this from Helsinki and you can spend an afternoon exploring the old town. The trip is about 2 hours each way, but there are dining and shopping options on the ship.
Another easy trip is to Stockholm! The ferry is longer, but as an overnight option there is a dinner buffet and entertainment on board. You get to view the beautiful archipelago as you cruise, as well.
